Dr. Michael Rimlawi is the Director and Founder of the Minimally Invasive Spine Institute. He is a board-certified, fellowship-trained spine surgeon who completed unique training in both orthopedic-spine and neurosurgery-spine at the renowned University of California San Diego. Dr. Rimlawi treats all aspects of spinal disease including degenerative and traumatic conditions of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. He is a leader in the field of minimally invasive spine surgery and a pioneer in endoscopic laser spine surgery.
Dr. Rimlawi prides himself on his personal approach to patient care. In recognition of his devotion to patients, Dr. Rimlawi has been honored with numerous awards and accolades including the Patients’ Choice Award, for consecutive years, in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011; the Compassionate Award and Health Care Heroes Award in 2010; and the Eagle Condor Humanitarian Award in 2011. Also in 2011, he was deemed one of the “Top Orthopedic Surgeons” in Dallas by America Top 10. Key to this is deciding which patients would benefit most from surgery, when other conservative therapies have failed. Dr. Rimlawi utilizes state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures to determine the precise location of pain, facilitating the least invasive surgery possible and minimizing postoperative pain and recovery time.
In addition to caring for patients, Dr. Rimlawi is involved in ongoing research that aims to improve minimally invasive surgical techniques and devices. He was the first surgeon in America to perform the Globus Minimally Invasive XLIF procedure, and the first in the country to perform a minimally invasive lumbar fusion using STORKS endoscopic camera system. Dr. Rimlawi was also the first surgeon in Texas to perform the newest micro-endoscopic (camera assisted) spine surgery. This new technique involves an incision less than a quarter the size of standard minimally invasive spine surgeries. No general anesthetic or stitches are needed. Patients go home one hour after the procedure with a simple Band-Aid®. Dr. Rimlawi regularly performs minimally invasive fusion/stabilization procedures and even treats complex scoliosis surgeries with minimally invasive techniques. He strives to find the most minimally invasive way to fix his patients’ pain.
As an active member of the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgeons, Dr. Rimlawi regularly trains other spine surgeons around the world on the newest minimally invasive techniques. He is also a member of the North American Spine Society and the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery (ISASS). Dr. Rimlawi is a scientific advisor to numerous international spine technology companies and regularly appears as a consulting spine expert for NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, Health of the Nation with Dr. Mitchell Brooks, and 105.3 FM The Fan.
Ultimately, Dr. Rimlawi’s practice is defined by experience, honesty, and skill. As a result of his prestigious surgical training, his expertise with technological advances in minimally invasive spine surgery and, most important, his tireless commitment to his patients and their families, Dr. Rimlawi has become a leader in the field of minimally invasive spine surgery.
